On my nightstand: September 2008

For enjoyment:

So Brave, Young and Handsome by Leif Enger

The Fruit of My Lipstick by Shelley Adina (This young adult novel magically appeared in my mail. Did I sign on for a book tour?)

For learning:

The Lolita Effect (The Media Sexualization of Young Girls and What We Can Do about It) by M. Gigi Durham, Ph.D.

For faith:

I never finished Velvet Elvis by Rob Bell, so I’m re-reading it before I read his current book, Jesus Wants to Save Christians: A Manifesto of a Church in Exile.

I almost picked up a copy of The Shack yesterday, but decided against it. Reading about (detailed? grotesque?) violence against a child is too heartwrenching, even if fiction. I am curious about what the fuss is all about though. Maybe I’ll read it with one eye shut.

  1. I’m with you on The Shack — curious about the fuss, but thinking it’s not one I could stomach at this time of life.

That title about Jesus wanting to save Christians sounds interesting.

  2. Some interesting books! I think it’s funny when books magically show up in my mailbox, too. The perils of a book blogger.

  3. I must live under a rock because I have never heard of The Shack. But if it deals with child abuse it is definitely out for me!

  4. My opinion on The Shack (if you care to have it): there’s some bad theology in it (although in allegories, I’m willing to give some leeway). There’s horrible writing. I wouldn’t have gotten past the first couple pages if I hadn’t promised to read it for a friend. There’s some bad storytelling (it glosses over the fact that the main character killed his father). However, I think it does what it intended to do: show God’s love to a hurting man in extraordinary ways and challenge that man to forgive and be forgiven.

  5. Thanks, Heather. I appreciate your input.

  6. The Shack…hmm..Definitely not even close to any C.S. Lewis allegory’s I’ve ever read. It’s worth reading with one eye shut just to see what everyone else is talking about. I know friends who say it has changed their lives. I just smile and say “that’s great!” I truly am glad about that. It’s an ok story. As Heather said, pretty bad story telling. I cringed about 100 times reading it, BUT, it is helping a lot of people for some reason.
That’s my 2 Cents for the day! :)

  7. Curious about The Shack as well. Not sure I could read it though. Will have to give it a try and see what the hype is all about.

As a mother of 3 girls, I am interested in The Lolita Effect, now that you’ve mentioned it.
